The city's water department provides safe,
quality, drinking water to residents. Water quality is tested
almost continuously in the plant laboratory. the city relies
primarily on surface water from the Yahoola Creek, but the water
supply is supplemented with wells. The city can produce up to
1,730,000 gallons per day and has storage capacity for 1,600,000
gallons. The system presently supplies about 1,200 customers.
The city has received state awards for outstanding operations
in the one to three million gallons daily range. The city is
continuing to expand capacity to accommodate future growth. The
Water Department has staff available 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, to handle repairs and respond to emergencies. |

City Waste Water Treatment Plant |
|
In early 1998 the city completed construction
of a new waste water treatment plant. The new plant, now on line,
can process one and a half million gallons per day. It is expected
that the new plant will handle Dahlonega's growth for the next
ten to twenty years. Computerized operations with the latest
technology are employed. When the water has been thoroughly cleaned
and is ready to leave the plant, ultraviolet light is used to
destroy all microbes. Finished waster is discharged into Yahoola
Creek and is said to be clean enough to drink. |
